SACSCOC Launches Major Workforce Alignment Initiative Engaging Colleges and Universities
DECATUR, Ga. – The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) has launched a major initiative to strengthen how colleges and universities prepare students for the evolving workforce, made possible through a grant from the Lumina Foundation.
The two-year initiative will bring together institutions across the SACSCOC membership – including community colleges, public and private universities, and research institutions – to better align academic programs with workforce needs across the United States.
The project represents a new collaborative approach to workforce readiness in higher education: one that places institutions themselves at the center of identifying workforce gaps, developing solutions, and sharing effective practices.
“SACSCOC serves a diverse membership that educates millions of students,” said Dr. Stephen L. Pruitt, President of SACSCOC. “Through this partnership with Lumina Foundation, we are creating a framework for institutions to work together across sectors and across states to strengthen the connection between higher education and meaningful careers.”
The initiative is designed to address a persistent challenge in higher education. While workforce needs are often well documented at the state level, there is a need to develop clear mechanisms that enable the translation of those priorities into program development with clear career paths for students.
Rather than relying on top-down directives, SACSCOC will partner directly with member institutions to analyze workforce data, identify gaps between education and labor market needs, and co-develop practical strategies for responding to workforce priorities.
A Network for Workforce Alignment
A central component of the initiative will be the creation of a Workforce Coordinator Network, with participating institutions designating a campus leader responsible for connecting their institution with the broader workforce ecosystem.
These coordinators will participate in a community of practice supported by SACSCOC, including:
- Quarterly convenings and collaborative workshops
- Cross-state data analysis on workforce priorities
- Institutional gap assessments and benchmarking
- Development of shared tools, templates, and program design strategies
By creating a structured network of institutional leaders, SACSCOC aims to transform individual campus efforts into a learning community focused on workforce responsiveness and student success.
Four-Phase Strategy to Strengthen Workforce Pathways
The initiative will unfold in four phases designed to move institutions from analysis to action:
- State Workforce Analysis:
SACSCOC will collaborate with state workforce agencies, higher education system offices, and national partners to gather workforce priority data across its membership. - Institutional Gap Discovery:
Participating institutions will examine how their program offerings, completion rates, and geographic access align with workforce demand. - Best Practice Co-Development:
Institutions will work together to develop guidance for designing workforce-aligned programs, learning outcomes, and assessment frameworks. - Workforce Summit:
The project will culminate in a summit in early 2027 bringing together institutional leaders, employers, and policymakers to share strategies and launch an ongoing professional network focused on workforce innovation.
Building Long-Term Infrastructure
Beyond the initial grant period, SACSCOC plans to integrate workforce alignment into its ongoing programming, including the Annual Meeting, Summer Institute, peer reviewer training, and leadership development programs.
Resources developed through the initiative – including toolkits, case studies, and program development templates – will be made available to institutions across the SACSCOC membership.
“Our goal is not just to study workforce needs,” Pruitt said. “It is to build lasting infrastructure that helps institutions respond to those needs while maintaining the academic quality and mission that define higher education.”
